Who is the Gate?

The Gate was founded in 1979 and is committed to telling stories beyond our borders. We are a producing theatre company working with partner venues and other collaborators to platform international voices in the UK.

Who is the artistic director of the Gate?

The Gate is made up of a small team that work together to support artists across the year and each production brings together the best possible company of creatives for that piece of work. Atri Banerjee is the Gate’s Creative Associate and acts as the artistic lead for the Gate, leading on programming in conjunction with our Senior Producer and Executive Director & CEO, and ensuring we keep art at the heart of our strategy and business planning.

Where is the Gate?

The Gate office is based at No.38 Mayton Street, London, N7 6QR. We share this space with three other theatre companies Tamasha, New Earth Theatre and Paines Plough.

The Gate Theatre was originally based in Notting Hill above the Prince Albert pub and more recently has presented seasons of work at Theatro Technis @26 Crowndale Road, Camden. We no longer run our own theatre venue so you will find venue details for each show listed on the show page on our website.

Are the Gate's physical spaces accessible?

The Gate office space in Holloway has step free access and larger accessible toilets within the building.

We endeavour to present our productions in accessible spaces. Information regarding venue and physical accessibility will be listed on each show’s page.

I want to support the Gate - how can I?

The Gate is a charity and relies on the generosity of our supporters to continue to make ground-breaking, international theatre. There are several ways you can support.

  1. You can make donations at any time – donate here. Donations can also be made when you purchase tickets or any other items from the Gate.
  2. If you would like to support the Gate regularly, you can join our Supporter Scheme from £5 a month – find out more about becoming a Supporter.
  3. The Gate runs giving campaigns across the year. Over the past year this has included our GiveMatch campaign. These campaigns are posted across our social media channels, so please follow to keep up to date.

If you would like to discuss more tailored support, please get in touch with Nicola Clements, [email protected]

How can I work for the Gate?

All job opportunities will be listed on our website, across our social media and arts job boards. We currently do not have capacity for interns or work experience placement.

Artists

How to be part of a Gate production?

We build our cast and creative teams as per the needs of each project. The best way to be on our radar is to invite us to your work. We may on occasion put out open calls for creative positions or go through casting websites. To see open opportunities sign up to our newsletter and/or follow our social media channels.

What artist opportunities are the Gate offering?

Alongside the Productions we have our Gateways programme which is made up of events, masterclasses and sharing’s across a year to engage with artists at all levels. All programmes will be announced on our website, social media channels and on our dedicated page for artist development.

This page also includes signposting for international artist opportunities and schemes here in the UK for international artists. This list is not exhaustive, and these opportunities are not affiliated with Gate Theatre.

I would like to invite The Gate to a show or sharing - who do I get in contact with?

For invitations to a sharing, reading or show, please fill out our invite form. We welcome invitations from artists who would like to us to see work in development to be considered for programming, and from artists who would like us to see their work to be considered for future roles on Gate productions.

The forms are monitored weekly and only shows that align with our programming priorities will be reviewed by the team. Unfortunately, as a small team do not have the capacity to see everything that we are invited to or to respond to each form individually, but we endeavour to see as much as possible

I would like to pitch a show to be programmed at the Gate?

The Gate does not currently accept pitches or unsolicited scripts. If you have a show that is being developed and there is a sharing or reading that you would like us to attend then please send us an invitation.

Information about any of our shows can be found on the show page on our website. When a production is on sale you will be able to purchase tickets online https://www.gatetheatre.co.uk/ or via email [email protected] .

Where can I find information about a show, content guidance etc?

All information, including content guidance, about a show is listed on the show page on our website. If you have any other questions that are not answered through our production pages, please get in contact with the Gate team.

What is the ticket return and exchange policy?

Returns are only permissible if the show is cancelled by the Gate. Exchanges incur an additional £2 fee per ticket, and exchanges are only possible if there are available tickets for the date you wish to exchange for.

Do you have a latecomers/ readmittance policy?

We aim to start all performances at the time listed on the ticket and therefore ask audiences to arrive to the theatre before that point. Latecomers points and readmittance will be set for each show on an individual basis.

We endeavour to cause the least amount of disruption to those already seated in the theatre while allowing any latecomers the earliest point of entry. Similarly to our latecomer’s policy, readmittance is dictated by the nature of the show and is stated on the show page on our website and will be reiterated in pre-show emails.

Can I purchase merchandise for a show?

For each performance, we have a selection of merchandise available to purchase at the theatre. This includes but is not limited to playtexts, tote bags, badges etc. Please get in touch with our Box Office to find out what merchandise is on offer for our on-sale productions.

Can I bring a school or community group to see a show?

Yes, please come! We welcome schools and community groups to come and see our productions. When a show is on, please get in contact with our Box Office regarding a school or group booking. Here, we can offer guidance on the show’s themes and suitability for your group, share our prepared education packs with you, and the Gate can chat about arranging additional activities to enrich a school or community group’s visit to our productions.

Do you offer anything beyond productions?

Yes! Our Gateways programme runs alongside each production. It is a series of talks, commissions, and curated events that offer audiences opportunities to learn more about our work, our artists, and how our productions relate to the wider world. All audiences are invited to engage with the programme. Information about the events and opportunities on offer will be listed on our on-sale production pages.

What are access performances?

Across the performance run, the Gate offers access performances to ensure more audience members can engage with the work we do, making the work we produce more inclusive to a wider audience. Some of the access performances we offer across our run include.

  1. Audio- Described (with a Touch Tour) – This performance is for those who require audio-description to best view our productions, with an optional Touch Tour with our Audio Describer and cast an hour before the show.
  2. Captioned – These performances feature a caption unit on stage for those who are best supported by using script captioning.
  3. BSL Interpreted – These performances feature a British Sign Language Interpreter to support those d/Deaf or hard of hearing to watch Gate productions.
  4. Relaxed – These performances have modified elements of the production to provide a more relaxing sensory experience. These modifications vary from each production, but examples include having the house lights up, lower audio, audience readmittance, reduced seating capacity, and a casual attitude to noise and movement within the theatre.

I have an access need- who can I get in touch with?

When purchasing a ticket for a production, ensure you select the ticket type listed Access. Once you have done this. get in touch via email [email protected] with your specific access need and our Front of House team will ensure your experience is as accessible and accommodating as possible. If you need a companion to join you, they can select this ticket type when purchasing their tickets online.

What is a ‘Pay What You Can Performance’ and how can I book one?

Across each run, we have performances that will be sold on a Pay What You Can basis. This gives you the option to choose a lower ticket price than usual that you can afford to pay. This is to make our shows financially accessible to those who wish to see them.
